Murdoch Children’s Research Institute
Swisse has been proudly supporting the Centre for Hormone Research for many years. Our ongoing commitment to this much needed research is part of our goal to make a difference within the community.
The Centre for Hormone Research is the Research Arm of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. The Centre is a member of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and is headed by Professor George Werther, who directs some 35 doctors, scientists, nurses and support staff.
The Centre’s mission is to understand the causes and seek more effective prevention and treatment of disorders that affect growth and sexual development, including the major chronic childhood and adolescent disease of diabetes, and the emerging epidemic of childhood obesity.
The research has been highly successful to date. Results include a number of important discoveries about the nature of diabetes complications in adolescence, such as its effects on brain development, the role of growth factors in brain injury and disease, and the nature of genes controlling gender.
The Centre’s work is supported by grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Australian Research Council and several other national and local bodies. The Centre has urgent and ongoing needs in support of its research, by way of providing career paths for young medical researchers, equipment, travel and other scholarships, laboratory supplies and other infrastructure.
