Tom Harley

A dual flag-winning skipper of the Geelong Cats, Tom Harley retired in 2009, leaving behind one of the best captaincy records in AFL history. Harley’s leadership skills were consistently praised during his time and he established himself as one of the most respected leaders in AFL.

On retirement, Harley joined the Seven Network as a commentator, filling the much-coveted seat on Friday Night Football and making regular appearances during games and on talk show AFL Game Day. He also appeared weekly on Sunrise and Seven Nightly News during the season.

In 2010, Harley also took up a year-long role as Project Consultant to the Greater Western Sydney Football Club while working with the AIS/AFL Academy as an Assistant Coach and Mentor. In September 2010, Harley released Standing Tall (Penguin Books Australia),– a book he penned himself on confidence, teamwork and leadership. He also wrote a weekly column for The Age during the AFL finals.

In 2011, Harley was appointed Manager, Planning & Operations of NSW/ACT AFL and Coach of the NSW/ACT Under 16 team and AIS/AFL – he is back in the commentating chair with Seven and will also be doing public speaking engagements.

Career Highlights

  • Appointed captain of the Geelong Cats in 2007, Harley led the Cats to a flag in his first year, helping to break the clubs 44-year premiership drought and a second flag in 2009
  • Played in the consecutive AFL grand finals – Premiers in 2007 & 2009
  • All Australian selection in 2008, being named as team vice captain
  • Voted 2008’s Best AFL Captain by AFL Players’ Association
  • Inducted into Geelong Football Club Hall of Fame
  • Debut 1998 for Port Adelaide.
  • Number two for Geelong playing a total of 198 career games
